Megadyptes antipodes

Known for their solitary nature, Yellow-eyed Penguins are less social than other penguin species. They prefer to nest in dense vegetation, far from others, and are shy around humans. These penguins spend much of their day at sea hunting fish and squid, returning to their nests in the evening.

The breeding season starts in August, with nests well hidden in forests or scrublands. They lay two eggs, with both parents sharing incubation duties. The chicks are brooded and fed by both parents, which is crucial for their survival in the challenging environment.

This species is distinguished by its pale yellow eyes and bright yellow headband stretching from eye to eye. They are among the larger penguins, reaching up to 65-79 cm in height. Their unique markings and solitary behavior set them apart from other penguins.
