Melopsittacus undulatus

Budgerigars are highly social, nomadic birds that often travel in flocks ranging from a few individuals to hundreds or even thousands after favorable rainfall. They feed mainly on grass and herb seeds, usually foraging on the ground and gathering regularly at water sources to drink and maintain flock contact.

Budgerigars breed opportunistically in response to rainfall and abundant food rather than following a strict annual season. They nest in natural tree cavities, where females commonly lay six to eight eggs, and suitable conditions may allow pairs to produce several broods in one year.

Wild budgerigars have bright green bodies, yellow faces, black-and-yellow barring across the head and wings, blue cheek patches, and long tapered tails. Males typically have a blue cere above the beak, while females have a brownish cere during breeding and a paler bluish one at other times.

The budgerigar was first scientifically described by George Shaw in 1805 and was later placed in the genus Melopsittacus. Fossil remains attributed to the same species have been found in Queensland deposits dating to about four million years ago, while captive populations ultimately descend from Australia’s wild birds.

The budgerigar is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and remains widespread across much of mainland Australia. Its populations can fluctuate dramatically with rainfall, drought, seed availability, and access to water, but the species is not currently considered globally threatened.
