Chimpanzees exhibit remarkable intelligence and complex social behaviors, living in communities that can number in the dozens. They use tools for foraging and hunting, have a wide range of vocalizations for communication, and demonstrate deep emotional bonds within their groups.

Female chimpanzees have a gestation period of about eight months and typically give birth to a single offspring. The interval between births can be as long as five years, as mothers invest significant care and teaching into each infant. Males do not typically help raise the young but play a role in the social structure of the group.

Chimpanzees are covered in coarse black hair, except for their face, fingers, palms, and soles of their feet. They have robust bodies with long arms that extend beyond their knees, aiding in their ability to swing through trees, though they spend much time on the ground as well.

Chimpanzees have coexisted with humans for millennia, deeply embedded in the lore and ecosystems of Africa. Their discovery by Western science in the 17th century marked a pivotal point in the study of primatology, reshaping our understanding of intelligence and social complexity in the animal world.

Classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List, chimpanzee populations are declining due to habitat destruction, hunting, and disease. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting their natural habitats, enforcing laws against poaching and illegal trade, and supporting sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers.
