Agapornis fischeri

Fischer's lovebirds are highly social birds that usually live in small flocks and maintain close relationships with their mates. They are active, playful, and vocal, spending much of their time flying, foraging, preening, and communicating with flock members through calls and body movements.

Breeding typically occurs during the dry season when food availability is favorable, and pairs usually nest in tree cavities or abandoned bird nests. Females commonly lay three to eight eggs, which they incubate for about 23 days, while both parents help feed and care for the chicks until they become independent.

Fischer's lovebirds have a bright green body, a golden-yellow collar, an orange-red face, and a distinctive white eye ring. Their short, rounded tails and strong curved beaks are well adapted for climbing, feeding on seeds, and handling plant materials.

The species was discovered in the late 19th century and was scientifically described by German ornithologist Anton Reichenow in 1887. Its attractive colors and small size led to widespread popularity in the international pet trade, resulting in both captive breeding programs and increased pressure on wild populations.

Fischer's lovebird is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List due to population declines caused mainly by habitat loss, agricultural expansion, and illegal trapping for the pet trade. Conservation efforts include habitat protection and regulation of international trade through CITES to help maintain remaining wild populations.
