Potos flavus

Kinkajous spend most of their lives in the forest canopy, sleeping in tree hollows during the day and emerging after sunset to forage. They often feed alone but may belong to stable social groups whose members share sleeping sites, groom one another, communicate through vocalizations, and mark territories with scent.

Kinkajous can reproduce throughout the year, although local breeding peaks may be influenced by seasonal fruit availability. After a gestation of approximately 98–120 days, the female usually gives birth to one pup, occasionally two, and provides nearly all parental care until the young becomes independent at around four months old.

Kinkajous have thick golden-brown fur, large forward-facing eyes, rounded ears, short legs, sharp curved claws, and a long, fully prehensile tail that functions like an extra limb. Their reversible hind feet, flexible spine, and elongated tongue help them climb, hang beneath branches, and reach fruit or nectar in difficult locations.

The species was scientifically described by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1774 under the original name Lemur flavus. Although its primate-like appearance and climbing adaptations once caused taxonomic confusion, it is now classified as the only living species in the genus Potos within the raccoon family, Procyonidae.

The kinkajou is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List because it remains widely distributed across the Neotropics. However, regional populations are threatened by deforestation, hunting for meat and pelts, and capture for the wildlife trade, making continued habitat protection and trade monitoring important.
