Vulpes vulpes

Red foxes are generally solitary hunters but may live in small family groups, particularly during the breeding season. They are most active from dusk to dawn and use vocal calls, scent markings, and body language to communicate and defend their territories.

Mating usually occurs during winter, and females give birth after a gestation period of approximately 49–58 days. A typical litter contains four to six pups, which are raised in an underground den with food and protection often provided by both parents and, occasionally, other group members.

Red foxes have slender bodies, pointed muzzles, upright triangular ears, and long bushy tails, often tipped with white. Their coat is commonly reddish-orange, but naturally occurring silver, black, and cross-colored variations are also found.

The red fox was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 and is classified within the family Canidae. North American populations were once sometimes treated as a separate species called Vulpes fulva, but modern taxonomic authorities generally include them within Vulpes vulpes.

The red fox is classified as Least Concern, with its global population currently considered stable. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in forests, grasslands, farmland, and cities, although some regional populations face hunting, disease, habitat changes, and control programs where the species is considered invasive.
