Psittacula krameri

Rose-ringed parakeets are highly social birds that often gather in large flocks for feeding and communal roosting. They are intelligent and adaptable, feeding mainly on seeds, fruits, flowers, buds, and cultivated crops while communicating through loud, distinctive calls.

Rose-ringed parakeets are seasonal breeders that usually nest in tree cavities, although they may also use holes in buildings or other structures. Females commonly lay around four eggs, which hatch after about three weeks, and both parents help feed and protect the chicks until fledging.

Rose-ringed parakeets have slender bodies, long blue-green tails, strong curved red beaks, and predominantly green plumage. Adult males typically develop a black and rose-pink ring around the neck at maturity, while females and juveniles usually lack a complete ring.

The species was scientifically described by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli in 1769 under the original name Psittacus krameri and was later placed in the genus Psittacula. Because of its popularity in the pet trade and ability to adapt to cities, escaped or released birds have established large introduced populations across Europe, the Middle East, North America, and other regions.

The rose-ringed parakeet is classified as Least Concern and remains widespread and abundant across much of its native range. It has also become invasive in several regions outside its natural distribution, where expanding populations may compete with native cavity-nesting birds and cause agricultural damage.
