Isurus oxyrinchus

The Shortfin Mako Shark is an apex predator known for its incredible speed, capable of reaching speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), making it one of the fastest fish in the ocean. It's highly migratory, covering vast distances in search of food, which includes bony fish and cephalopods.

This species practices oophagy, where the first embryos to hatch consume their later-hatching siblings within the uterus. The gestation period is about 18 months, after which females give birth to live young, usually in the open ocean.

Distinguished by its torpedo-shaped body and pointed snout, the Shortfin Mako has a dark blue back and a white underbelly, with a caudal fin designed for speed. They are among the largest of the mako sharks, with adults commonly reaching lengths of up to 3.2 meters (10 ft).

The Shortfin Mako has been a subject of fascination and study due to its speed and power. It has a significant presence in popular culture and is a prized catch in sport fishing.

The Shortfin Mako is currently listed as Endangered by the IUCN. Overfishing for their fins, meat, and sport, along with bycatch, has significantly reduced their populations worldwide.
