Paguma larvata

Masked palm civets are primarily nocturnal and generally solitary, resting in trees, dense vegetation, rock shelters, or buildings during the day. They are agile climbers and opportunistic omnivores whose diet includes fruit, insects, small vertebrates, and other available foods, with feeding patterns changing according to seasonal fruit availability.

Breeding patterns vary geographically, but research in Taiwan indicates a breeding season extending from spring to autumn, with mating occurring mainly in spring. Females usually produce approximately two to four young per litter and raise them in protected nesting sites such as tree cavities, roofs, or other sheltered spaces.

This species has an elongated body, short legs, a long tail, and a coat ranging from gray or pale brown to dark brown. Its most recognizable feature is the contrasting facial mask, usually formed by a pale stripe along the nose and forehead bordered by dark patches around the eyes and cheeks.

The species was formally described by Edward Griffith in 1822 under the original scientific name Gulo larvatus. It was later transferred to the genus Paguma and is now classified within the civet family Viverridae.

The masked palm civet is classified as Least Concern because of its extensive range, relatively large population, presence in numerous protected areas, and tolerance of habitat disturbance. Nevertheless, regional populations face threats from habitat loss, hunting, wildlife markets, meat production, vehicle collisions, and attacks by free-roaming dogs.
