Aedes albopictus

Asian tiger mosquitoes are primarily active during the day, especially in the early morning and late afternoon, and they are known for their aggressive biting behavior. They feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and humans and are vectors for diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Females lay their eggs in standing water, often in containers such as tires, plant pots, or clogged gutters. The larvae hatch in water, developing into adults in 7–10 days under favorable conditions, which has contributed to their rapid spread.

These mosquitoes are small (about 2–10 mm) with black bodies and white markings, particularly on their legs and a characteristic white "Y" or lyre-shaped pattern on their thorax. Their small size and striking appearance make them easily identifiable.

Native to Southeast Asia, the Asian tiger mosquito has spread globally, largely through human activity such as trade and travel. It was first recorded outside Asia in the 1980s and has since become a significant pest and vector in many countries.

The Asian tiger mosquito is not endangered, but it is considered a public health threat due to its role in spreading diseases. Control efforts focus on reducing standing water, using insect repellents, and public education to prevent its spread.
