Trypoxylus dichotomus

Males use their horns in physical battles to establish dominance and secure mates, lifting and pushing other males during breeding seasons. The beetles are nocturnal and are attracted to fermented fruit and tree sap, using their strong mandibles to feed.

Females lay eggs in decaying wood or organic material, where the larvae hatch and feed on the decomposing matter. The larvae undergo several molts before pupating and emerging as adults, which live for several months, primarily focusing on reproduction.

This beetle is robust, measuring up to 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) in length, with males bearing large horns that are often longer than their body. Their dark, shiny body provides camouflage against tree bark, and their legs are adapted for digging and climbing.

Native to Japan, the Japanese rhinoceros beetle has been a part of the local culture for centuries, often kept as a pet in Japan due to its striking appearance and strength. It has also been studied for its role in natural pest control.

The Japanese rhinoceros beetle is not considered endangered and is widespread in its native range. However, it faces threats from habitat loss and competition with other species in urban and suburban areas.
