Coccinella septempunctata

Seven-spotted ladybugs are active during the day and are known for their voracious appetite for aphids, helping to naturally control insect populations in gardens and agricultural fields. They often cluster in groups during colder months or when abundant food sources are available.

Females lay clusters of eggs on the undersides of leaves, typically near aphid colonies. The larvae, which hatch after a few days, are also voracious predators of aphids and continue to grow until they pupate and become adult beetles.

Adult seven-spotted ladybugs are about 7–8 mm in length, with a distinctive bright red or orange elytra (wing covers) featuring seven black spots arranged in a characteristic pattern. They have a rounded body, black legs, and antennae, with an ability to secrete a foul-smelling fluid as a defense mechanism.

Native to Europe, the seven-spotted ladybug has spread to many parts of the world, including North America, where it is widely appreciated as a natural pest controller. It has been the subject of studies on biological pest control due to its effectiveness in reducing aphid populations.

The seven-spotted ladybug is not considered endangered and is common in many regions. However, it faces competition from invasive ladybug species, such as the multicolored Asian ladybug, which has impacted some local populations.
