Anoplophora chinensis

Adults are strong climbers and can crawl or fly short distances between host trees; they feed on shoots, leaves and bark and are active in warm months. They use chemical and visual cues to find hosts; human transport of infested wood, nursery stock or packing material is the main pathway for long-distance spread.

Females chew cavities or crevices in the bark of host trees and deposit single eggs; larvae hatch and bore into the cambium and heartwood, creating long galleries as they feed. Development from egg to adult may take one to several years depending on climate and host quality; pupation occurs within the wood and newly emerged adults exit through round emergence holes.

Adults measure roughly 20–35 mm (size varies) and bear long, banded antennae (often 1.5–2× body length in males). Coloration is variable but typically black or dark brown with irregular pale blotches; larvae are creamy, elongate grubs with well-developed chewing mouthparts adapted for wood-boring.

Native to East Asia (China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and nearby regions), A. chinensis has become a major sanitary pest where transported outside its native range. It has been repeatedly intercepted and has established invasive populations in parts of Europe, North America and other regions through trade in wood packaging, live plants and timber.

Recognized worldwide as a quarantine and invasive pest, citrus longhorned beetle populations trigger eradication, quarantine and tree-removal programs when detected; regulatory agencies monitor nurseries, ports and wood movements to prevent spread. It is not of conservation concern as a species, but as an agricultural/forestry pest it poses serious economic and ecological risks where introduced.
