Axolotls reach sexual maturity at about 18 months and breed primarily during the spring. In captivity, breeding can be induced by simulating seasonal changes. They lay eggs which the female deposits on substrates in the water.

Varies greatly, with some species laying eggs in water and others on land; many undergo a larval stage.

Axolotls are notable for their neotenic features, meaning they retain juvenile characteristics throughout their life, such as their dorsal fin running along the length of the body and external gills. They can be found in wild-type colors of grey and greenish-brown, but captive breeding has produced varieties including albino, golden, and leucistic.

Axolotls are native to the ancient system of water channels and lakes in Mexico City, specifically Lake Xochimilco. Their name comes from the Nahuatl language, potentially meaning "water monster," and they hold a significant place in Aztec mythology.

Axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species. Their wild population is confined to the dwindling and increasingly polluted waters of Lake Xochimilco. However, they are commonly bred in captivity for research due to their regenerative abilities and are popular as exotic pets.
