Budgett's Frogs are known for their aggressive demeanor when threatened, capable of inflating their bodies and emitting a loud, piercing scream to startle predators. They are primarily nocturnal, spending the day buried in mud or shallow water and becoming active at night to feed on invertebrates, fish, and even other frogs.

The breeding season for Budgett's Frogs occurs during the rainy season when temporary pools form, providing ideal breeding grounds. Males call to attract females, who lay eggs in these pools. The tadpoles are carnivorous and grow rapidly, requiring substantial food to support their quick development into frogs.

Budgett's Frogs have a distinctive appearance with a flat, broad body and large mouth, which is useful for their sit-and-wait predatory strategy. They can grow up to 4-5 inches (10-12.5 cm) in length, making them quite large for a frog. Their eyes are set high on their heads, allowing them to see while mostly submerged.

This species is native to the Gran Chaco region of Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia, adapted to the seasonal fluctuations of this harsh environment. They are capable of surviving dry periods by aestivating in mud until the rainy season returns.

While not currently listed as endangered, Budgett's Frogs face threats from habitat destruction due to agricultural expansion and pollution. Their populations are also impacted by the international pet trade, where they are sought after for their unique appearance and behaviors. Conservation efforts are needed to monitor their population status and ensure that their natural habitats are preserved.
