Gorilla

Gorillas are primarily herbivorous and live in cohesive groups known as troops or bands, led by a dominant male called a silverback due to the silver-gray hair on his back. They are highly social animals, exhibiting complex social behaviors such as grooming, play, and communication through vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions.

Female gorillas give birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of about 8.5 months. Young gorillas, called infants, are dependent on their mothers for several years and are raised within the protective social structure of the troop.

Gorillas are the largest living primates, with males weighing up to 200 kilograms (440 pounds) or more. They have a coarse, dark fur coat that varies in color, often dark brown or black. Gorillas are predominantly quadrupedal (walking on all fours), although they can walk bipedally (on two legs) for short distances.

Gorillas are native to the forests of central Sub-Saharan Africa and are found in various habitats, including lowland and mountain forests. They have long been subjects of study due to their close genetic relationship to humans and their complex social behaviors.

Both species of gorillas, the Eastern and Western Gorilla, are listed as critically endangered or endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Threats include habitat loss due to deforestation, illegal hunting (poaching), and disease. Conservation efforts focus on protecting their habitats, combating illegal wildlife trade, and promoting sustainable practices to ensure the survival of these remarkable primates.
