Ailurus fulgens

Red pandas are generally solitary and most active around dawn, dusk, and nighttime, resting in trees during much of the day. They are skilled climbers that descend trunks headfirst and communicate primarily through scent marking, although they also produce squeals, twitters, grunts, and other quiet vocalizations.

Mating normally occurs during early winter, with most births taking place in late spring or summer after a gestation of approximately 134 days. Females usually give birth to one to four cubs in a hollow tree, rock crevice, or sheltered nest and care for them without assistance from the male.

Red pandas have reddish-brown upper fur, dark legs and undersides, white facial markings, and long bushy tails patterned with alternating reddish and pale rings. Flexible ankles, curved semi-retractable claws, fur-covered feet, and a modified wrist bone functioning as a “false thumb” help them climb and grasp bamboo.

French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier formally described Ailurus fulgens in 1825, and its classification was long debated because it shares features with raccoons and bears. It is now placed in its own family, Ailuridae, although some modern authorities recognize the eastern red panda as a separate species, Ailurus styani, while others retain both forms within one species.

The red panda is classified as Endangered, with a continuing decline in mature individuals and habitat quality. Major threats include forest loss and fragmentation, infrastructure development, poaching and illegal trade, livestock disturbance, and predation or disease transmitted by free-roaming dogs.
